So here it is, the first post on my blog, and where do I start!! Obviously I will be gabbing on about cakes, giving you sneaky peaks at my current designs, giving some tutorials, showing cakes in process, and the cakes that gave me inspiration to start decorating in the first place!! Here are the first;
The Caketress , Colette Peters, Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes and Ron Ben Israel are a few amazing cake makers and decorators that made me realise that cake could be a work of art! I mainly took inspiration from the more extravagant designs. For me, designs come from looking at fashion, interior design and anything around me really! I tend not to look at other cakes too much, as I like my designs to be really individual, but it is good to look at how other decorators use sugar, fondant and chocolate.
I came across cake decorating in unfortunate circumstances really, but there is always a silver lining and the company was definitely a good one! I am self taught, mainly through books and tutorials on line. The first books I bought were, ‘cakes to inspire and desire’ by Lindy Smith, and ‘cakes to dream on’ by Colette peters. These give great instructions and recipes, and they gave me the confidence to make my first tiered and topsy turvy cake last year!
The cake was tiring and took a lot longer than I imagined! But was well worth it and since then I’ve been hooked! If you were making one of these cakes, allow twice the amount of time you think its going to take! There Is a lot of measuring and a lot of carving, but they look quite quirky when they’re done.
